About Mastery Quests
Mastery Quests is an adaptive educational gaming platform designed to turn retrieval practice, corrective feedback, and targeted review into a coherent path toward mastery.
The purpose
Many review activities present the same sequence to every student and stop after marking an answer right or wrong. Mastery Quests uses performance, question history, learning-objective tags, response patterns, and recent difficulty to shape what the student encounters next.
The game layer provides momentum and identity. The learning layer determines the route.
Design commitments
Questions are selected from structured pools using recent performance, concept history, fluency, and learning-objective coverage.
A missed concept can activate repair and bridge questions intended to address the underlying gap before the student moves on.
Completed runs summarize accuracy, time, streaks, strengths, weaknesses, and recommended priorities for additional review.
Templates and tools allow instructors to replace the disciplinary content and visual identity without rebuilding the adaptive engine from scratch.
Multiple modes support different study goals while sound controls, keyboard access, readable interfaces, and reduced-motion preferences remain part of the design.
The platform will continue to improve through classroom use, faculty feedback, question audits, usability review, and careful testing of the adaptive engine.
Creator
Mastery Quests was created by William Jennings Byrd, Ph.D., an Associate Professor and Associate Chair at Troy University. His teaching focuses on principles of economics, intermediate economics, and managerial economics, and has developed the platform through his work in economics education.
